Beckwith's Bio

The Artist

Beckwith Thompson, is fine artist mainly using photographic portraiture as her way of expressing the delicacy of relationships. In addition to sharing the beauty of the world around her and teaching others to see light, she has led an interesting life for a girl from West Texas. Besides photographing for decades, she has been an adjunct instructor at Odessa College and at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

She received her B.S. in Communications with an emphasis in advertising from the University of Texas at Austin. Beckwith graduated on a Saturday, said goodbye to her folks on a Sunday and took a train to New York City that Monday. The following week, she began working as a copywriter for an ad agency headquartered in the Chrysler Building.

After tiring of life in the city, Beckwith embarked on what proved to be a number of adventure jobs: she drove art cross-country for photographer, Richard Avedon; she served as a loader in multiple countries for photographer Mary Ellen Mark; she had the privilege of assisting renowned photographer Ruth Bernhard, who was 94 years old at the time, and: she worked as a cook on an Arabian horse ranch in Wyoming. In all, her adventures have taken her to 15 countries and 48 states. She returned to Lubbock to clean out a closet of treasures and left 6 years later with a Masters of Fine Arts degree from Texas Tech University.

She lives with her photographer husband, Steve Goff, in a fabulous little cottage---known neighborhood-wide for its working clock tower---built in the 1930s. Beckwith and Steve love to garden, cook, and make art.
